On Tasting Block This Week: Los Cameros Mezcla Curado and Brunet

Welcome back to the tasting block! If there is one thing we love more than finding a spectacular new cheese, it is sharing that discovery with you. This week, our tasting board is taking a trip across Europe. We have got a legendary Spanish mixed milk cheese with a trophy cabinet most producers only dream of, and an incredibly elegant, creamy Italian goat cheese that will completely change how you view goat's milk.

Whether you are putting together a weekend grazing board or just want to elevate your midnight snacking, these are tasting experiences you will not want to miss.

Los Cameros Mezcla Curado: The Spanish Masterclass in Blending

Why settle for one type of milk when you can have three? "Mezcla" translates directly to "mixed", and "Curado" means "cured" or "aged". Hailing from Haro, a small town in the heart of Spain's celebrated La Rioja wine region, the family-owned Quesos Los Cameros creates a flavour profile that no single milk could achieve on its own.

It is an expert blend of pasteurised cow's milk (minimum 60%), sheep's milk (minimum 20%), and goat's milk (minimum 6%). Aged for a minimum of six months, the cheeses are regularly washed in the family's own extra virgin olive oil. This oil washing creates a natural protective barrier, moderates the mould, and adds a beautifully subtle aromatic dimension. The result is a living, natural rind of ochres, browns, and greens that signals genuine cave ageing.

This approach is why Los Cameros Mezcla Curado is one of the most decorated artisan cheeses in Spain. It recently won Super Gold at the 2025 World Cheese Awards, an accolade given to fewer than 2% of entries. It was also named the Best Matured Mixed Milk Cheese in Spain by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2023.

Tasting Notes:

  • Texture: A warm straw-yellow paste with small, even eyes.

  • Flavour Profile: An earthy and herbal aroma with cellar depth and a grassy lift from the olive oil. On the palate, it is creamy at first, building to a brilliant pepper and savoury depth.

Brunet: The Elegant Italian

If you usually shy away from goat's milk, Brunet is the cheese that converts the sceptics. Typical of its origins in Torino, Piemonte, this lightly aged Italian goat cheese is incredibly elegant and sophisticated. Influenced by its proximity to France, the Piemonte region is famous for crafting delicate cheese styles that make brilliant companions for refined, cool climate wines.

Aged for approximately two months, Brunet is a masterclass in texture.

Tasting Notes:

  • Texture: It boasts a gorgeous fudgy interior, while the outer layers become increasingly lush and creamy as the rippled, off-white edible rind works its magic.

  • Flavour Profile: A beautiful, delicate balance of mushroom earthiness and a bright citrus tang.

  • Pairing: Because of that lovely citrus note, a lightly chilled dry white wine like a Chenin Blanc pairs flawlessly. Serve it simply with some crusty wood oven bread and a few slices of fresh pear.

Reading about these incredible products is great, but tasting them is where the real magic happens. We have got both the Los Cameros Mezcla Curado and the Brunet ready and waiting for you on the tasting block this Friday.
